Duties of reviewers
Contribution to Editorial Decisions
Peer review plays a crucial role in assisting editors with publication decisions. Additionally, through constructive feedback, reviewers help authors enhance the quality of their manuscripts. As a fundamental aspect of scholarly communication, peer review is integral to maintaining the integrity of the scientific process
Timeliness
Reviewers who feel unqualified to evaluate a manuscript or are unable to complete the review promptly should inform the editor as soon as possible and withdraw from the review process.
Confidentiality
Manuscripts submitted for review must be treated as confidential. They should not be shared with or discussed with anyone except as authorized by the editor.
Objectivity and Professional Conduct
Reviews should be conducted impartially and objectively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Reviewers should provide their evaluations clearly and support their assessments with well-reasoned arguments.
Acknowledgment of Sources
Reviewers should ensure that relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors is identified. If a statement, argument, or finding has been previously reported, it should be accompanied by the appropriate citation. Additionally, reviewers should alert the editor to any significant similarities or overlaps between the manuscript under review and any other published work of which they are aware.
Disclosure and Conflict of Interest
Unpublished information contained in a submitted manuscript must not be used in a reviewer’s own research without the explicit written permission of the author. Any privileged information or insights gained through the review process must remain confidential and must not be used for personal benefit. Reviewers should decline to review manuscripts in which they have a conflict of interest due to competitive, collaborative, or other relationships with any of the authors, affiliated institutions, or companies associated with the manuscript.
For any policies not covered in these guidelines, authors and reviewers are encouraged to refer to the International Standards for Editors and Authors issued by COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) at https://publicationethics.org/core-practices. [back to Publication Ethics]
